CELEBRATIONS IN THE DOGE'S PALACE

Project

Doge’s Palace, Sala della Quarantia nova civil
From February 24th to May 6th 2012

Over the course of 2012, there will be three dossier exhibitions at the Doge’s Palace, organized using items drawn from the vast and varied artistic and bibliographical collections of the Fondazione dei Musei Civici di Venezia. The exhibitions aim to explore and focus on various aspects of the Venetian Republic’s social and cultural life, in close reference to the major fresco cycles and socio-political function of the monumental architectural spaces of the splendid Doge’s Palace.

In the first exhibition, dedicated to Celebrations in the Doge’s Palace, the protagonists will be the fine prints drawn by Canaletto and engraved by Giambattista Brustolon. The prints themselves are well-known even to the general public, but their specific interest here lies in the fact that most of the subjects show scenes within the Doge’s Palace. Moreover, they will be shown alongside the original copper plates (today conserved in the Museo Correr) from which they were printed between 1768, year of the first edition published by Lodovico Furlanetto, and the mid-19th century. These wonderful graphic works perfectly illustrate institutional Venetian life and were widely distributed around Europe.
