Canaletto and Venice
Guided tours

The exhibition
This splendid exhibition shows the extraordinary artistic flowering of eighteenth-century Venice as it drew towards the end of the Republic. The guided tour will lead visitors on an itinerary to understand the different aspects of this creative explosion, through a number of masterpieces. From the Venetian vedutismo and its greatest exponent, Canaletto to the renewed art of portraiture, with Rosalba Carriera; from the bright and dynamic compositions of Giambattista Tiepolo to the genre painting of Pietro Longhi, and on to the modern, shimmering and allusive visions of Francesco Guardi and Giandomenico Tiepolo. The century of enlightenment, and the exhibition itself, close with the emergence of Neoclassicism, dominated by the giant that was Antonio Canova. The exhibition will show all this and much more, and the guided tour offers a valuable, unmissible experience both to understand a period of great complexity, and to enjoy a succession of great works in the fields of painting, sculpture and the decorative arts.

The exhibition Canaletto and Venice or The eighteenth century: its splendour and complexity
Interactive tours

The exhibition
An extraordinary artistic flowering, in which Venice stands out, blossomed towards the end of the Republic. Venetian artists were working abroad, celebrating absolute kings who would soon have their authority questioned or destroyed by the Revolution and its subsequent developments. Other artists were depicting everyday life with interest, showing the world as it appears, illuminated with a new light and a new vision. The tour we offer through this splendid exhibition is structured in such a way as to link artistic production with the many complex aspects of an extremely important, contradictory historical period, between industrial, technological and political revolutions, wealth and poverty, new ideas and anciens régimes, which would result in the birth of a “new world”.

With Canaletto: a surprise… to build!!
Workshop

After a selective visit to the exhibition, focusing in particular on the views, in the workshop we will try out a surprising and unexpected activity, during which we will build something very “Canalettian” with our own hands…
Participants will also be given a leaflet enabling them to play a game on their own after the exhibition, looking for the places in the city portrayed by eighteenth-century painters and comparing them with how they look today.
Duration: 2 hours
