Doge's Palace

SEA ROUTES. PORTOLANS AND NAUTICAL CHARTS

Project

Doge’s Palace, Sala dello Scrutinio
From May 18th to August 30th 2012

Over the course of 2012, there will be three dossier exhibitions at the Doge’s Palace, organized using items drawn from the vast and varied artistic and bibliographical collections of the Fondazione dei Musei Civici di Venezia. The exhibitions aim to explore and focus on various aspects of the Venetian Republic’s social and cultural life, in close reference to the major fresco cycles and socio-political function of the monumental architectural spaces of the splendid Doge’s Palace.

In tribute to the America’s Cup, the qualifying races for which were organised in Venice, the prestigious collection of Portolans and nautical charts from the Museo Correr will go on display in the Doge’s Palace. On show will be more than 50 rare examples of marine cartography dating from the 14th to the 18th century. Original instruments once used aboard Venetian ships, also from the Museo Correr, together with pilot’s books, an expression of Venice’s great seagoing culture, round off an exhibition full of curiosities that is sure to appeal to “salty dogs”.
