The exhibition
For the celebrations of the 1600th anniversary of the founding of Venice (25 March 421), the Doge’s Apartment in the Doge’s Palace is hosting an exhibition divided into sections giving an account of the 1600 years of the Serenissima Republic’s history: from the birth of the ‘chosen city’ and the legend of St. Mark to the creation of the maritime empire and the privileged relationship with the Levant; from the Renovatio Urbis and the fire in the Doge’s Palace (1577), to the plague of 1576 and 1630; from the glory and fall between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, to Venice as the capital of contemporary art in the twentieth century and a city engaged in the great challenges for the future. The guided itinerary winds its way past important paintings – including works by Carpaccio, Titian, Bellini, Tiepolo, Canaletto and Guardi – sculptures, glass, clothes, fabrics, period furnishings and objects of daily use. These bear witness to Venetian enterprise in all fields – exploration, navigation, commerce, publishing, the arts – as well as to the civil and political values that have made it famous over the centuries.
